Acting Chairman Pension Reform Task Force, is alleged to have mismanaged ₦21B+ in Police Pension Office funds; fled, reinstated as director 2017, finally tried December 2020
What happened
In 2017, Abdullahi Maina was controversially reinstated as a director in the Federal Ministry of Interior, despite being wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged pension fraud. As former Acting Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Force, Maina had been accused of misappropriating over ₦21 billion from the Police Pension Office between 2010 and 2013. His reinstatement sparked public outrage and political controversy, as he had previously fled Nigeria while under investigation.
The pension fraud scandal emerged from Nigeria's broader struggle with reforming its civil service pension system in the 2000s and 2010s. The Pension Reform Task Force was established to clean up decades of mismanagement in government pension schemes, but instead became associated with some of the largest alleged thefts in the system's history. Maina's case represented the challenges facing anti-corruption efforts during the Goodluck Jonathan and early Muhammadu Buhari administrations, where high-profile suspects often evaded prosecution for years.
