Energy Commission of Nigeria
Federal agency responsible for coordinating Nigeria's energy policy.
What happened
The Energy Commission of Nigeria emerged as a federal institution designed to centralize and coordinate the country's fragmented energy policy framework. Established during President Bola Tinubu's administration, the commission was tasked with overseeing Nigeria's transition from heavy oil dependence toward renewable energy sources and improving electricity access across the federation. The agency was positioned to work alongside existing bodies like the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Department of Petroleum Resources.
Nigeria's energy sector had long suffered from institutional overlap, policy inconsistencies, and poor coordination between federal agencies. Despite being Africa's largest oil producer, the country struggled with chronic electricity shortages, affecting over 85 million citizens without reliable power access. The commission's creation reflected growing recognition that Nigeria needed unified energy planning to address climate commitments, diversify the economy, and meet the power demands of its rapidly growing population of over 220 million people.
