What happened

In 2011, Farida Waziri completed her tenure as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), becoming the first woman to lead Nigeria's premier anti-corruption agency. During her final year in office, she compiled comprehensive statistics documenting the commission's conviction rates and asset recovery efforts under her leadership. These statistical reports provided detailed data on the EFCC's performance in prosecuting financial crimes and recovering stolen public funds from 2008 to 2011.

Waziri had been appointed EFCC Chairman in 2008 by President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua, taking over from Nuhu Ribadu amid significant changes in Nigeria's anti-corruption approach. Her appointment came during a period when the EFCC faced criticism over its methods and political independence. As a career police officer who had risen to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General, Waziri brought a different leadership style to the commission, emphasizing due process and institutional reforms while working to rebuild relationships with other government agencies.
