Jonathan concedes before full escalation
Jonathan called Buhari to concede, helping prevent a dangerous post-election crisis.
What happened
On March 31, 2015, President Goodluck Jonathan made a phone call that changed Nigerian political history. Before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had finished announcing results from the presidential election, Jonathan called his opponent Muhammadu Buhari to congratulate him on victory. This unprecedented concession came as early results showed Buhari's All Progressives Congress (APC) defeating Jonathan's People's Democratic Party (PDP) across northern states and key swing regions.
The 2015 election occurred amid rising tensions over Boko Haram insurgency, economic challenges from falling oil prices, and widespread corruption allegations. Many Nigerians feared potential violence, remembering the deadly post-election crisis of 2011 when over 800 people died following disputed results in northern states. International observers and civil society groups had warned of possible unrest, while security agencies prepared for worst-case scenarios as results began favoring the opposition candidate.
