What happened

In 2021, Ngozi Olejeme, former Managing Director of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), was arraigned on charges related to a massive N69 billion fraud case. The charges stemmed from allegations that funds meant for workers' compensation and social security were systematically diverted during her tenure at the federal agency. The case became one of the most significant corruption prosecutions of the Fourth Republic era, highlighting the scale of financial misconduct within Nigeria's social security institutions.

The NSITF was established to provide social protection for Nigerian workers through compensation for workplace injuries and other benefits. However, like many government agencies, it became vulnerable to corruption as oversight mechanisms remained weak and accountability structures proved insufficient. The alleged fraud occurred during a period when Nigeria was grappling with economic challenges and increased scrutiny of public financial management, particularly following civil society pressure for greater transparency in government spending.
