Nigeria confirms first COVID-19 case
NCDC announced Nigeria's first confirmed COVID-19 case on 27 February 2020.
What happened
On 27 February 2020, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed the country's first case of COVID-19, marking Nigeria's entry into the global pandemic. The case involved an Italian citizen who had traveled to Lagos from Milan on 25 February. Health Minister Osagie Ehanire announced that the patient was clinically stable with no serious symptoms and was being treated at the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos. Contact tracing immediately began for passengers and crew on the Turkish Airlines flight.
The confirmation came as COVID-19 was rapidly spreading across the globe after emerging in Wuhan, China in late 2019. Nigeria had been preparing for potential cases since January 2020, with the NCDC activating emergency response protocols and screening procedures at international airports. Lagos, as Nigeria's commercial hub and main international gateway, was considered the most likely entry point for the virus. The federal government had already begun coordinating with state governments and international health organizations to develop response strategies.
