What happened

On February 27, 1999, Olusegun Obasanjo of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) won Nigeria's presidential election with 62.8% of the vote, defeating Olu Falae who was jointly backed by the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and All People's Party (APP). The election marked Nigeria's transition from military to civilian rule after 16 years of military government. International observers, including teams from the Carter Center and National Democratic Institute, monitored the process across Nigeria's 36 states.

This election followed General Abdulsalami Abubakar's transition program launched after the sudden death of military ruler Sani Abacha in June 1998. The military government had released political prisoners, lifted bans on political activities, and organized local, state, and federal elections within one year. Obasanjo, a former military head of state (1976-1979) who had voluntarily handed power to civilians, emerged from prison where Abacha had detained him on coup plot charges. His candidacy appealed to those seeking both democratic credentials and strong leadership.
