What happened

In 2009, William Jefferson, a Democratic Congressman from Louisiana, was convicted in a US federal court on corruption charges linked to business dealings in Nigeria. The case centered on allegations that Jefferson received bribes to help facilitate telecommunications investments involving former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Jefferson was found guilty of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in exchange for using his political influence to advance business ventures in West Africa, including Nigeria.

The case emerged from a broader FBI investigation into international corruption that began in the mid-2000s. Jefferson had cultivated business relationships across West Africa, particularly in the telecommunications sector, during a period when Nigeria was liberalizing its telecom industry under President Obasanjo's administration. The investigation gained notoriety when FBI agents discovered $90,000 in cash hidden in Jefferson's home freezer, money allegedly connected to the Nigerian business deals.
