What happened

On June 8, 1998, General Sani Abacha died suddenly at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, ending one of Nigeria's most repressive military regimes. The official cause of death was reported as a heart attack, though the circumstances remained controversial and sparked widespread speculation. Abacha had ruled Nigeria since November 1993 following the annulment of the June 12 election and the brief civilian government of Ernest Shonekan.

Abacha's five-year rule was marked by severe human rights abuses, international isolation, and systematic looting of the treasury. His government executed prominent activists including Ken Saro-Wiwa, imprisoned political opponents like Moshood Abiola and Olusegun Obasanjo, and faced mounting pressure from pro-democracy movements and international sanctions. By 1998, Abacha was maneuvering to transform from military dictator to civilian president through a controversial transition program that would have legitimized his continued rule.
