What happened

On June 11, 1994, exactly one year after the annulled presidential election, Chief Moshood Abiola publicly declared himself the rightful president of Nigeria at a ceremony in Lagos. Speaking before supporters and international observers, Abiola invoked his June 12, 1993 electoral mandate, arguing that the military government led by General Sani Abacha had no legitimate authority. Within hours of his declaration, security forces arrested Abiola and charged him with treason.

Abiola's declaration came after a year of political turmoil following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which he had convincingly won. The military government of Ibrahim Babangida had cancelled the results, leading to widespread protests and eventually Babangida's resignation. General Abacha, who took power in November 1993, had shown no intention of recognizing the election results or transferring power to civilian rule, prompting Abiola to take this dramatic step to claim his mandate.
