What happened

In 1995, General Sani Abacha's military government conducted trials of alleged coup conspirators, including former military head of state Olusegun Obasanjo and retired General Shehu Musa Yar'Adua. The secret tribunal sentenced Obasanjo to 15 years imprisonment and Yar'Adua to life imprisonment, along with dozens of other military officers and civilians. The trials were conducted in secrecy without proper legal representation, drawing widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and the international community.

The alleged coup plot emerged amid growing opposition to Abacha's increasingly authoritarian rule and his apparent plans to extend his military government indefinitely. Obasanjo, who had previously ruled Nigeria from 1976-1979 and voluntarily handed power to civilians, had become a vocal critic of Abacha's policies and human rights abuses. The military government used the coup allegations as a pretext to eliminate prominent critics and potential rivals, part of a broader crackdown on opposition voices that included the execution of Ken Saro-Wiwa and other Ogoni activists.
