What happened

On June 23, 1993, military ruler General Ibrahim Babangida announced the annulment of Nigeria's June 12 presidential election, widely considered the freest and fairest in the country's history. The election had been won by Moshood Abiola, a wealthy Yoruba businessman from the southwest, who defeated Bashir Tofa in what appeared to be a decisive victory. Babangida cited alleged irregularities and legal challenges as justification for voiding the results, though international observers had praised the election's conduct.

The annulment came after years of Babangida's promises to return Nigeria to civilian rule following his 1985 coup. His transition program had been repeatedly delayed and restructured, creating growing frustration among Nigerians eager for democratic governance. The June 12 election was particularly significant because Abiola, despite being Yoruba, had won substantial support across Nigeria's ethnic and religious divides, including strong backing in northern states traditionally dominated by Hausa-Fulani politicians.
