Zamfara State is created
Zamfara was separated from Sokoto in the 1996 restructuring.
What happened
On October 1, 1996, General Sani Abacha's military government announced the creation of six new states, including Zamfara State carved out of Sokoto State. The new state was formed with Gusau as its capital, bringing together twelve local government areas that had previously been part of Sokoto. This creation was part of a broader administrative restructuring that also established Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Gombe, and Nasarawa states, increasing Nigeria's total from 30 to 36 states.
The push for Zamfara's creation had been building for years among communities who felt marginalized within the larger Sokoto State structure. Local leaders argued that their region's distinct identity, economic needs, and administrative challenges required separate state status for effective governance. The area's significant agricultural potential, particularly in cotton and livestock production, and its historical importance as part of the old Zamfara Kingdom provided additional justification for statehood. Abacha's government used state creation as a political tool to build support and demonstrate responsiveness to regional demands.
