What happened
In August 1967, Biafran forces under Colonel Victor Banjo successfully captured Benin City, the capital of Nigeria's Midwest Region, during a surprise military offensive. The occupation lasted several weeks as Biafran troops consolidated control over much of the Midwest, declaring it the "Republic of Benin" under Colonel Albert Okonkwo as administrator. This represented the furthest westward advance of Biafran forces during the civil war, bringing the conflict directly into Nigeria's oil-rich heartland.
The Midwest campaign emerged from Biafra's strategic need to break out of the eastern enclave where federal forces had contained them since the war began in July 1967. Biafran leadership believed capturing the Midwest would provide access to additional oil resources, create a buffer zone, and potentially encourage international recognition of their independence. The region's significant Igbo population and its strategic position between the Eastern Region and Lagos made it an attractive target for expanding Biafran territory.
