Federal troops captured Enugu, Biafra's first capital.
What happened
In September 1967, Nigerian federal forces under the command of Colonel Murtala Muhammed successfully captured Enugu, forcing Biafran leaders to abandon their first capital. The fall came after weeks of intense fighting as federal troops advanced from multiple directions, overwhelming Biafran defenses. Lieutenant Colonel Ojukwu and the Biafran government evacuated to Umuahia, marking a significant early defeat for the breakaway republic just months after declaring independence.
Enugu had been chosen as Biafra's capital due to its strategic importance as the administrative center of the former Eastern Region and its symbolic value to Igbo identity. The city housed key government institutions and served as the political heart of the secession movement. Federal forces prioritized capturing Enugu to demonstrate that Biafra could not hold its own declared capital, while also gaining control of the region's coal mining infrastructure that had historically powered Nigeria's railways.
