What happened

On February 18, 1977, over 1,000 Nigerian soldiers surrounded and attacked Fela Kuti's Kalakuta Republic compound in Surulere, Lagos. The musicians, family members, and followers living in the commune were beaten, and many were arrested. Soldiers set fire to the buildings, destroying Fela's master recordings, instruments, and the clinic that served the local community. Fela's 77-year-old mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, was thrown from a window during the raid and later died from her injuries.

The raid followed months of tension between Fela and Nigeria's military government under General Olusegun Obasanjo. Fela had declared his compound an independent republic in 1970, refusing to pay taxes and openly criticizing military rule through his Afrobeat music. His songs like 'Zombie' mocked Nigerian soldiers, while his lifestyle and political activism challenged both military authority and conservative social values. The government viewed Kalakuta as a center of subversion and drug activity that threatened state authority.
