What happened

On February 3, 1976, General Murtala Muhammed's military administration created Niger State as part of a comprehensive restructuring that increased Nigeria's states from 12 to 19. The new state was carved from the northern and eastern portions of the former North-Western State, with Minna designated as its capital. This reorganization affected the administrative control of vast territories that included major river systems and diverse ethnic communities across the Middle Belt region.

The creation followed mounting pressure for smaller, more manageable administrative units that could better serve local populations and reduce ethnic tensions. The original North-Western State, established in 1967, had proven too large and diverse for effective governance, encompassing different ethnic groups with varying needs and interests. Military leaders viewed state creation as a solution to administrative inefficiency and a way to bring government closer to the people while potentially reducing regional conflicts.
