What happened

In December 1901, British colonial forces launched a major military expedition against Arochukwu, the spiritual and commercial center of the Aro Confederacy in southeastern Nigeria. Led by Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur Montanaro, the expedition involved over 3,000 troops who systematically destroyed the famous Ibini Ukpabi oracle and captured the town after fierce resistance. The campaign effectively dismantled the Aro trading network that had dominated commerce and religious authority across Igboland for centuries.

The Aro Confederacy had controlled long-distance trade routes and wielded enormous influence through their oracle, which people from across southeastern Nigeria consulted for major decisions. British colonial administrators viewed the Aro network as an obstacle to direct colonial rule and blamed them for resistance to British authority in the region. The expedition was part of Britain's broader strategy to eliminate indigenous power structures that competed with colonial administration and to establish direct control over trade and governance in southeastern Nigeria.
