British Cameroons is linked to Nigerian administration
After World War I, part of former German Kamerun became a British mandate administered with Nigeria.
What happened
In 1922, the League of Nations formally granted Britain a mandate to administer the western portion of former German Kamerun, which became known as British Cameroons. Rather than creating a separate colonial administration, the British decided to govern this territory through the existing Nigerian colonial structure. The mandate was divided into two parts: Northern Cameroons was administered alongside Northern Nigeria, while Southern Cameroons was linked to Southern Nigeria's administrative system.
This arrangement emerged from the post-World War I reshuffling of German colonial territories under the League of Nations mandate system. Germany had lost all its African colonies after its defeat in 1918, and Kamerun was divided between Britain and France. The British chose administrative integration with Nigeria primarily for economic efficiency and convenience, as the territories shared similar ethnic groups, trade patterns, and geographic features along their borders.
