What happened

The first slave-trade treaty with a Niger Delta state was concluded with Bonny on 11 March 1839. "After a long palaver", Bonny agreed to abolish the trade provided they received from the British Government an annual present of 2,000 dollars for five years—stated to be not more than half the revenue derived from the export slave trade. The treaty was negotiated by Commander Craigie on behalf of the British Government.
