What happened

By 13 February 1892 the 'High Court of the Native Council of Old Calabar' was already in existence, with the consul-general as its president, acting as a court of appeal for a number of Minor Courts established on the Cross River. Also by 2 July 1892 Native Courts had been established at Bonny, Buguma, and Degema, though these could not function effectively owing to lack of clerks to record proceedings. Before Macdonald left the country, courts were already functioning at Calabar, Bonny, Degema, Buguma, Akpayafe, Tom Shott, Adiabo, and Itu, each meeting for business twice a month.
