What happened

Itsekiri tradition dates the migration of Iginuwa from Benin — with seventy sons of Benin nobles — to the reign of Oba Olua (given by Egharevba as 1473–80). Iginuwa founded a kingdom among existing Ijo and Urhobo fisher-folk in the western delta, taking the title Olu; the kingdom had developed by the mid-16th century, ruled by an Olu and a council of Ojoye.
