What happened

Tradition relates that Oba Olua, one of Ewuare's sons and his predecessor on the throne, determined to establish his unpopular eldest son Iginua in his own chiefdom. Iginua was sent into the swamp forest around the Benin River equipped with royal regalia and attended by chiefs' sons; around this group formed the embryonic Itsekiri kingdom. Ewuare had earlier sent an illegitimate son to Ughoton to be the first chief (Olughoton) of that riverside town. Both settlements marked the awakening of Benin interest in the coastlands.
