What happened

When the chief of Ughoton returned to Benin from his visit to Portugal, he was accompanied by d'Aveiro and officials tasked with establishing in Benin a feitoria or trading post — the first to appear in Guinea after São Jorge da Mina. Through this post, John II intended to ensure that Benin trade, especially pepper, passed exclusively through the Casa da Mina government department. D'Aveiro himself died at Ughoton, the first known European victim of a place notorious for high mortality. The post had a chequered, discontinuous existence, and appears to have been abandoned during the reign of John II who died in 1495.
