What happened
João Afonso d'Aveiro died at Ughoton shortly after arriving in 1487. His successors are mostly unknown; Duarte Lopes died at Ughoton in 1504. De Barros implies the post was abandoned during the reign of John II who died in 1495. Pacheco Pereira, who visited Benin four times in the 1490s, makes no mention of a trading establishment. A letter from the acting-captain of São Tomé in July 1499 suggests that no royal factor then resided in Benin, and that the captain could supply enough slaves from the slave rivers without the need for a permanent post except for the pepper trade.
