What happened

In 1842 a slave-trade abolition treaty was concluded with Old Calabar (Cross River area), committing the Efik rulers of the city to end the export slave trade. The Efik had been the dominant middlemen of the Cross River trade for over a century. Like the Bonny treaty, this agreement was secured partly through the promise of annual subsidies and partly through the demonstration of naval force.
