What happened

In the period 1898–9 there were already about twenty-three Native Courts in the Niger Coast Protectorate. By 1899–1900 the District of Calabar alone had one Native Council and fifteen Minor Courts; the total for the portion of the protectorate lying between the River Niger and the Cameroons boundary was about six Native Councils and twenty-four Minor Courts. These courts were distributed among the districts of Old Calabar, Opobo, Bonny, New Calabar (Degema), Brass, and Akwete.
