What happened

Civilian Governor of Kano State briefly in the Second Republic (1 October 1983 - 31 December 1983) under the People's Redemption Party (PRP), removed by the Buhari-Idiagbon military coup on 31 December 1983. After the coup, security forces searching the Kano Government House reportedly recovered roughly N3.4 million in cash 'stacked up' in his private bedroom; his retort 'Government money in Government House, what's wrong with that?' became one of the era's most-quoted lines. He was tried in Kaduna by the Buhari-era Special Military Tribunal on Corrupt Practices (Kaduna Zone) chaired by Navy Captain M.A.B. Elegbede, and convicted in June 1984, together with his Commissioner for Rural Development Sani Sule, of accepting the equivalent of $135,000 in kickbacks on a contract awarded to a Bulgarian firm; each received a 22-year sentence with no right of appeal. He was further convicted on additional corruption counts in 1985. Released in January 1988 after the Babangida regime reviewed Buhari-era tribunal sentences. Died 16 February 1989 at age 54.
