Convicted
Alhaji Adamu Atta
Alhaji Adamu Atta, first civilian governor of Kwara State (NPN, 1 October 1979 – 31 December 1983), was tried by a Buhari-era Special Military Tribunal following the December 1983 coup. On 9 July 1984 the tribunal convicted him of embezzling $2.7 million from Kwara State coffers and of authorising more than $800,000 in illegal payments to Kwara State House of Assembly members. He was sentenced to 21 years' imprisonment, one of seven former Second Republic civilian governors so convicted. He had already lost his August 1983 NPN re-election bid before the coup. Atta died on 1 May 2014. Status: `convicted` (military tribunal, Buhari era).
