What happened

The year 1963 saw archaeology established as a recognised discipline in the universities of Ife, Ibadan and at Nsukka. It became possible for Nigerians to take a full degree in archaeology and to do postgraduate work in their own country. Increasingly archaeological research was being carried out by Nigerians rather than by foreign scholars.
