Awolowo is convicted and imprisoned

Obafemi Awolowo, leader of the opposition Action Group, was convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the federal government and sentenced to prison. The conviction deepened claims that federal institutions were being used against opposition politics, especially in the Western Region.
