In 2021, Abiodun Waheed Hassan was arraigned by Nigerian anti-corruption agencies in connection with a massive pension fraud scheme involving N26 billion from the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). The case represented one of the largest pension-related corruption scandals in Nigeria's power sector, affecting funds meant for retired workers of the former national electricity company. Hassan's arraignment was part of broader efforts to prosecute high-profile corruption cases that had plagued Nigeria's public institutions.

The fraud emerged from systemic weaknesses in Nigeria's pension administration, particularly following the 2005 Pension Reform Act and the privatization of PHCN in 2013.
