What happened

In October 2020, Amnesty International published a detailed investigative timeline documenting events at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020, during the #EndSARS protests. The human rights organization used video evidence, witness testimonies, and digital forensics to reconstruct the sequence of events when security forces confronted protesters at the Lagos toll plaza. Their investigation challenged official government accounts and provided what became a key reference document for understanding the controversial incident.

The investigation emerged following weeks of nationwide #EndSARS protests against police brutality, particularly by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). Young Nigerians had occupied the Lekki Toll Gate as a peaceful protest site for nearly two weeks before the October 20 incident. When the Lagos State government imposed a curfew and protesters remained at the toll gate, conflicting accounts emerged about what happened that evening, prompting calls for independent investigation into the events.
