What happened

In 2007, Ayo Fayose, the former Governor of Ekiti State, was arrested and charged with corruption-related offenses following his impeachment and subsequent flight from Nigeria. Fayose had served as governor during the early years of Nigeria's Fourth Republic but was removed from office by the state legislature. After his impeachment, he reportedly left the country before returning to face legal proceedings initiated by anti-corruption agencies.

Fayose's rise and fall occurred during President Olusegun Obasanjo's administration, when federal and state politics were marked by intense power struggles and corruption allegations. As governor of the newly created Ekiti State, Fayose was allegedly closely aligned with Obasanjo's political network. However, the relationship between federal and state governments during this period was often turbulent, with impeachment proceedings becoming a common tool for political control and score-settling across various states.
