Electoral Act 2022 signed

In February 2022, President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Electoral Act 2022 into law after months of political negotiations and revisions. The legislation introduced significant reforms to Nigeria's electoral process, including mandatory use of the Biometric Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) for voter verification and electronic transmission of results from polling units. The Act also expanded the legal framework for campaign financing and candidate nomination procedures across all levels of government.

The push for electoral reform had intensified following controversies in previous elections, particularly the 2019 general elections where disputes over result transmission and voter verification sparked widespread criticism. Civil society organizations, opposition parties, and international observers had long called for technological improvements to reduce electoral fraud and increase transparency. The National Assembly had passed earlier versions of the bill, but President Buhari had previously declined to sign them, citing concerns about timing and implementation challenges before eventually approving the final version.
