Jersey (Channel Islands) Law Officers' Department
Custodian of the Doraville Properties Corporation account that held Abacha-family-linked funds in Jersey.
What happened
In 2010, the Jersey Law Officers' Department served as the custodian of the Doraville Properties Corporation account, which contained millions of dollars linked to Nigeria's former military ruler Sani Abacha and his family. Jersey, a British Crown dependency in the Channel Islands, had become a key location in international efforts to trace and recover assets looted during Abacha's regime (1993-1998). The department's role involved managing these frozen funds while legal proceedings determined their ultimate fate.
General Sani Abacha's military government had systematically diverted billions of dollars from Nigeria's oil revenues and other state resources into offshore accounts worldwide. After Abacha's sudden death in 1998, Nigeria's democratic government began working with international partners to locate and repatriate these stolen assets. The Doraville Properties Corporation was one of numerous shell companies used to hide Abacha family wealth across multiple jurisdictions, requiring complex legal cooperation between Nigerian authorities and offshore financial centers like Jersey.
