What happened

In 2010, Mohammed Sani Abacha, son of Nigeria's late military dictator General Sani Abacha, entered into a plea bargain agreement with authorities as part of ongoing efforts to recover funds looted during his father's regime. The agreement was part of broader international asset recovery initiatives involving Swiss banks and other foreign financial institutions where the Abacha family had hidden stolen Nigerian government funds. Mohammed Sani Abacha had been among family members targeted in the global hunt for assets illegally acquired during the military era.

General Sani Abacha ruled Nigeria from 1993 until his death in 1998, during which time his family and associates systematically looted an estimated $3-5 billion from the Nigerian treasury. After Abacha's death and Nigeria's return to civilian rule in 1999, successive democratic governments launched extensive efforts to trace and recover these stolen assets, working with international partners including Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and other countries where the funds had been deposited. The recovery process involved complex legal proceedings across multiple jurisdictions, often requiring cooperation from family members and associates.
