What happened

Muhammed Bello Adoke served as Nigeria's Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice from 2010 to 2015 under President Goodluck Jonathan's administration. During his tenure, he oversaw significant legal and policy decisions for the federal government. However, his time in office became overshadowed by corruption allegations, particularly related to the controversial Malabu oil deal involving Oil Prospecting License (OPL) 245, which led to his eventual arraignment by anti-corruption agencies.

The Malabu oil deal controversy centered on the disputed ownership and allocation of OPL 245, one of Nigeria's most lucrative oil blocks. The complex transaction involved Shell, Eni (an Italian oil company), the federal government, and Malabu Oil and Gas, a company linked to former Petroleum Minister Dan Etete. As Attorney-General, Adoke played a central role in facilitating the legal framework for the deal, which critics alleged involved improper payments and procedural violations that cost Nigeria billions in potential revenue.
