What happened

Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita served as Head of the Civil Service of the Federation from 2015 to 2017, making her the most senior civil servant in Nigeria during President Muhammadu Buhari's early administration. Her tenure ended abruptly when she resigned from office following investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The EFCC subsequently arraigned her on corruption charges, making her case one of the high-profile anti-corruption prosecutions of the Buhari era.

Oyo-Ita's appointment came during a period when the Buhari administration had made fighting corruption a central campaign promise and governing priority. As Head of the Civil Service, she was responsible for overseeing the federal bureaucracy and implementing civil service reforms. However, her position placed her at the center of government operations during a time when the administration was simultaneously investigating alleged financial irregularities in various ministries and agencies from previous administrations.
