What happened

In 2021, Muhammed Kuzachi was arraigned on charges related to his complicity in the controversial $9.6 billion Process and Industrial Developments (P&ID) arbitration award against Nigeria. The case emerged as part of broader investigations into what Nigerian authorities alleged was a fraudulent gas processing contract that had ballooned into one of the largest arbitration awards in history. Kuzachi's arraignment was documented in HEDA's comprehensive review of major corruption cases that year.

The P&ID case originated from a 2010 gas supply and processing agreement between the Irish company P&ID and Nigeria's Ministry of Petroleum Resources. When the project failed to materialize, P&ID pursued international arbitration, ultimately winning a $6.6 billion award in 2017 that grew to $9.6 billion with interest by 2019. Nigerian authorities later challenged the award in British courts, alleging the original contract was procured through corruption and that the arbitration process itself was tainted by fraud and bribery of Nigerian officials.
