Obasanjo sworn in; Fourth Republic begins

Olusegun Obasanjo became civilian president, ending nearly sixteen years of continuous military rule and almost three decades of military dominance since 1966. May 29 became the symbolic date of democratic return until June 12 was later recognized as Democracy Day.
