HEDA 2021 Compendium case #40 (p.30): Okoi Obono-Obla and 2 others - N10.1 Milli Fraud Trial.
What happened
In 2021, Okoi Obono-Obla, former Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Prosecution, was arraigned alongside two co-defendants on charges related to a N10.1 million fraud case. The charges were brought before a Federal High Court as part of ongoing anti-corruption prosecutions during the Buhari administration. Obono-Obla, who had previously headed the Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property, found himself on the opposite side of the corruption fight he once led.
Obono-Obla's fall from grace began after controversies surrounding his academic credentials and management of the presidential panel investigating corruption cases. He had been appointed in 2017 to lead efforts to recover stolen public assets, but faced mounting criticism over his methods and personal conduct. His dismissal from government service in 2019 preceded the criminal charges, highlighting the complex dynamics within Nigeria's anti-corruption institutions where investigators themselves sometimes become subjects of investigation.
