What happened

Oserheimen Osunbor, a law professor and academic, served as Governor of Edo State for just eighteen months from May 2007 to November 2008. Running on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform, he won the 2007 gubernatorial election in a contest that would later be scrutinized by the courts. His brief tenure ended abruptly when the Court of Appeal annulled his election on November 11, 2008, citing irregularities in the electoral process.

The 2007 elections across Nigeria were widely criticized for massive irregularities, vote-buying, and manipulation, with Edo State being no exception. Osunbor's victory was challenged by opposition candidate Adams Oshiomhole of the Action Congress (AC), who had previously served as President of the Nigeria Labour Congress. The legal challenge reflected broader concerns about electoral integrity during President Umaru Yar'Adua's administration, which had itself emerged from a disputed election that year.
