What happened

In 2021, Peter Hena and several co-defendants were arraigned on charges related to a massive N4.5 billion fraud case. The case was documented by the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA) as one of Nigeria's most significant corruption cases of that year. The arraignment represented another high-profile corruption prosecution during President Muhammadu Buhari's second term, when anti-corruption agencies were actively pursuing major financial crimes cases.

This case emerged during a period when Nigeria's anti-corruption institutions, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), were intensifying efforts to prosecute large-scale financial crimes. The Buhari administration had made anti-corruption a central policy priority since 2015, leading to increased investigations and prosecutions of both public officials and private individuals involved in major fraud schemes. Multi-billion naira fraud cases had become increasingly common as investigative capacity improved.
