What happened

Peter Odili, governor of Rivers State for two terms under the Obasanjo era, became the subject of an EFCC investigation in late 2006 covering allegations of fraud, conversion of public funds, money laundering and abuse of oath of office. On 23 March 2007 the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt (Justice Ibrahim N. Buba) granted a perpetual injunction restraining the EFCC from investigating, arresting, detaining or arraigning him over his tenure, in suit FHC/PH/CS/78/2007 filed by then Rivers Attorney-General Odein Ajumogobia. The injunction has shielded him from formal proceedings for nearly two decades; the EFCC has appealed since 2008, and on 10 March 2025 the Supreme Court (Okoro JSC presiding a five-member panel) dismissed Rivers State's counter-appeals, clearing a partial pathway for the Commission to revisit the probe. Odili has never been arraigned and no charges have been formally filed in court.
