In 2015, Reliance Referral Hospital Limited became embroiled in one of Nigeria's most significant corruption scandals when it was arraigned as the fourth defendant in case FCT/HC/CR/43/2015. The company was linked to the arms procurement fraud case through its connection to Aminu Baba-Kusa, a former General Manager at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), whose wife held major shares in the hospital. The case was part of the broader investigation into the alleged diversion of funds meant for military equipment to fight Boko Haram.

The charges emerged during President Muhammadu Buhari's anti-corruption drive, which targeted high-profile cases from the previous administration. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had been investigating the alleged diversion of $2.1 billion meant for arms procurement under former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki. Investigators discovered that funds had allegedly been channeled through various individuals and companies, including those connected to NNPC officials like Baba-Kusa, raising questions about how oil revenues were being used to fund personal business interests.
