What happened
On June 8, 1998, General Sani Abacha, Nigeria's military head of state since 1993, died suddenly at the presidential villa in Abuja. Official reports attributed his death to a heart attack, though the circumstances sparked widespread speculation. His death came just weeks after he had orchestrated his selection as the sole presidential candidate for planned elections in August 1998, effectively positioning himself to transition from military ruler to civilian president.
Abacha had seized power in November 1993 following the annulment of the June 12 presidential election and the brief interim government of Ernest Shonekan. His five-year rule was marked by severe human rights abuses, international isolation, and the execution of activists including Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni leaders in 1995. Despite promises of democratic transition, Abacha had systematically eliminated political opposition and manipulated the transition process to ensure his continued rule as a civilian leader.
