Abiola declares himself president
Abiola publicly claimed the presidency based on the June 12 election.
What happened
On June 11, 1994, Chief Moshood Abiola formally declared himself the lawful president of Nigeria at Epetedo in Lagos, exactly one year after the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election. Speaking before a crowd of supporters, Abiola invoked his mandate from the widely acknowledged election victory and called for the restoration of democratic rule. The declaration came amid mounting pressure from pro-democracy groups and civil society organizations demanding the validation of the election results.
Abiola's declaration followed months of political turmoil after General Sani Abacha seized power in November 1993, dissolving the Interim National Government that had replaced the annulled civilian transition. The June 12 election, considered one of Nigeria's freest and fairest, had seen Abiola defeat Bashir Tofa across ethnic and religious lines, winning in both northern and southern states. However, General Ibrahim Babangida annulled the results before stepping down, leaving Nigeria in constitutional crisis and Abiola's mandate unrecognized.
