What happened
Throughout 1994, Chief Moshood Abiola's continued detention by the Abacha military government drew increasing criticism from international human rights organizations, foreign governments, and the global media. The Commonwealth, United Nations, and Western nations including the United States and United Kingdom began imposing diplomatic pressure and sanctions on Nigeria. International observers characterized Abiola's imprisonment as a violation of democratic principles and human rights, transforming what had begun as a domestic political crisis into a major diplomatic issue for Nigeria.
Abiola's detention stemmed from his June 1994 declaration that he was Nigeria's rightful president based on his apparent victory in the June 12, 1993 election, which had been annulled by the Babangida government. When General Sani Abacha seized power in November 1993, he maintained the ban on Abiola assuming office and eventually arrested him for treason. The international community had initially hoped for a negotiated settlement, but Abacha's hardline approach and refusal to recognize the election results escalated tensions with foreign partners who had supported Nigeria's democratic transition.
