What happened
The People's Democratic Party (PDP) was formed in 1998 during Nigeria's transition from military to civilian rule, emerging as the dominant political force that would control the presidency from 1999 to 2015. Founded by a coalition of former military leaders, business elites, and regional power brokers, the party positioned itself as a broad-based platform for national unity. The PDP successfully fielded Olusegun Obasanjo as its presidential candidate in the 1999 elections, marking the beginning of the Fourth Republic.
The party's formation came during General Abdulsalami Abubakar's transition program following Sani Abacha's sudden death in 1998. Nigeria's political elite, eager to legitimize their influence in the new democratic dispensation, coalesced around the PDP as a vehicle for accessing power and resources. The party's structure reflected Nigeria's complex regional and ethnic dynamics, with leadership positions distributed among the country's major zones. However, this big-tent approach also created internal competition and allegations of corrupt practices, particularly during delegate conventions where vast sums allegedly changed hands to secure nominations.
